History Of the Church

For over 60 years SSBC has ministered to the spiritual needs of Newtown Square and the surrounding communities. Previous to this time, the Church met at 50th and Spruce Streets in Philadelphia from 1908 – 1963. Before that, the Church met at 418 Spruce Street for 70 years. During this time the Church became Spruce Street Baptist, having originally been First Baptist Church of Philadelphia.

Although the name and location of the Church have changed over the years, one thing has not changed… the message that is taught and preached. For almost 335 years Spruce Street has taught the good news of the Gospel of Christ. What is the good news? That God so loved the world that He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to this earth.

But more than these, to die on the cross for our sins. Through the death, burial, and resurrection of His Son, God provided a way for us to have an eternal relationship with Him. All you have to do is accept this free gift that is being offered.
